Sensex India: Stock Market Today

Sensex slips by 116.25 pts at close

Mumbai, Aug 16 (UNI) The 30 scrip index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today slipped by 116.25 points to end in red at 18,050.78 on profit booking at higher levels coupled with bearish trend in Asian Markets.

The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also fell by 33.80 points to end at 5,418.30.

Scattered demand from local operators saw the key indices of the two major bourses opening steady today. Sensex of the BSE opened at 18,169.80 and Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) was flat at 5,452.10 points. Sector indices wise, Realty, FMCG, Oil & Gas Auto, PSU and Bankex improved, while IT and TECK was in red.

A bout of volatility was witnessed in initial trade as the key benchmark indices swung between gains and losses. The market was a tad higher in morning trade as some Asian stocks came off initial lows and as US index futures reversed initial losses.

In late trade, the sensex slipped by 116.25 ps and Nifty by 33.80 pts. Barring FMCG, the idices like Metal, realty, capital goods and pharma stocks witnessed heavy selling pressure. Reliance, Infosys, ICICI Bank, L & T and SBI were the negative contributors to the Sensex, brokers said.

The sensex recorded the day's high and low at 18,203.92 and 17,997.46. Nifty registered the day's high and low at 5465.25 and 5397.40 respectively.

The shares that remained positive were Hind Unilver, Hero Honda, Maruti Suzuki and Bharti Airtel.

In the metal space, Hindustan Zinc, Tata Steel and SAIL were down 1-3 pc. DLF, DB Realty, HDIL and Godrej Properties were down 1-6 pc in the realty space. In the capital goods space, BHEL, Larsen, ABB and Engineers India were down 1-3 per cent.

The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.09 pc, while the Small-Cap index was down 0.21 pc. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

The market breadth was weak. On BSE, 1769 shares declined while 1195 shares advanced. A total of 97 shares remained unchanged.

From 30 share Sensex pack, 24 fell and the rest rose.

The turnover was of Rs 4835 crore, lower than Rs 6112.58 crore on Friday.

The key benchmark indices in Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea were down between 0.01 pc and 0.22 pc.

On the BSE, among the key indices that eased were Metal by 1.50 per cent to 15,108.22 points followed by Realty by 1.09 percent to 3635.07 points, CG by 0.90 per cent to 14557.41 points, HC by 0.85 per cent to 5469.66 points, Oil & Gas by 0.76 per cent to 10060.90 points, TECK by 0.69 per cent to 3418.17 points, IT by 0.64 per cent to 5478.86 points and Power by 0.59 per cent to 3103.49 points.

Sole FMCG rose by 0.78 per cent to 3304.92 points.

The scrip of Cipla slipped by 3.63 per cent to Rs 304.

Other top losers were Reliance Infra by 3.40 pc to Rs 1046.70, Reliance Comm by 2.74 pc to Rs 163.50, Jaiprakash Asson by 2.57 pc to Rs 117.55, ICICI Bank by 1.89 pc to Rs 957, Tata Steel by 1.77 pc to Rs 517.70, Tata Motors by 1.52 pc to Rs 1001.55, L & T by 1.18 pc to Rs 1787.60, ACC by 1.08 pc to Rs 833.95 and Hindalco Industries by 1.02 pc to Rs 164.45.

However, the gainers were Hind Unilever by 1.58 pc to Rs 269.90, ITC by 1.28 pc to Rs 158, Hero Honda by 0.40 pc to Rs 1891.75, Maruti Suzuki by 0.38 pc to Rs 1253.75 and NTPC by 0.26 pc to Rs 196.05.
